Peru is a large and diverse country perched on the mountainous Pacific flank of South America, sharing borders with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile. Within these geographical limits are found an astonishing range of ecosystems, from the awesome Andes mountain range to the gorgeous beaches of the coast; from the humid tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin to the driest deserts in the world. The ecological diversity of this magnificent country is reflected in the fascinating variety of its history, archaeology and culture, and in its warm, friendly people. The ancient city of Cusco, situated over 11,000 feet above sea level, was the capital of the powerful Inca Empire that predated the arrival of the Spaniards. Remains of the impeccably built walls of the principal Incan Palace and sacred temples can still be seen amidst Spanish colonial architecture. The Sacred Valley of the Incas, named because of its concentration of significant archeological sites, is rich with lush, verdant farmland that has grown nutritious corn and potatoes for centuries upon centuries. In the mountains alongside this valley the indigenous Quechua, direct descendants of the Inca, make their homes. A highlight of anyone’s visit to this great country is Peru's most famous Incan site – Machu Picchu, the mystical 'Lost City of the Incas'. Discover archeological relics of civilizations past, hike the impressive Inca Trail into Machu Picchu, and make friends with the interesting people that inhabit this enchanting land. Peru awaits you!
